The most recent case occurred on April 14 in the Reforma market, where complaints were received about the illegal sale of birds.
Upon arriving at the place, the authorities found 97 birds, some endangered or protected by law. Among them were pinzones, cardinals, jilgueros, blue, parrots and other types of birds.
Several of these animals are included in official lists of species at risk, such as NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 and CITES, which protect wildlife.
All copies were taken to an authorized place for their care, while the corresponding investigation is carried out.
Days before, on April 11, a search was also made in the customs of Ciudad Juárez. There were 280 more animals, mostly reptiles. Among them there were turtles, snakes, chameleons, bearded dragons, iguanas, tarantulas and anacondas, many of them also protected by law.
Until now, no one has appeared before the Federal Public Ministry to claim animals or show papers that prove that they were legal. Nor have any person been arrested in these cases.
The Profepa recalled that having or selling wild animals without authorization is a crime, and asked citizens to denounce this type of activities to protect fauna and avoid illegal traffic.
