The Congress of Peru on Wednesday has rejected the request made by the president of the country, Dina Boluarte, to travel to the Vatican in order to go to the funeral of Pope Francis that will take place this Saturday.
The Plenary of Congress has not approved the petition of Boluarte, having notified 40 votes in favor and 45 against. The head of state had asked to leave the national territory from April 24 to 28, as reported by the RPP station.
The Foreign Ministry, in the document presented to the Chamber, had considered “utmost importance” that the president participated in the ceremony in memory of the Pontiff and recalled the relationship of this with Peru, a country he visited in January 2018.
-The parliamentarians, during the debate prior to the vote, had expressed their disagreement with the request claiming that the country has problems that it has to address.
After the refusal of Parliament, Boluarte has announced that Sunday will take place in the Pope Government Palace. “This Sunday, that seven days of his sensitive death, we will be holding a Mass in honor and tribute to our Holy Father,” he said.
During an event of people with disabilities, he explained that he wanted to “participate in his funeral to bring him the farewell affection of the Peruvian people.” “When we find out about the death of the Holy Father, I remembered some words of affection to the Pope’s Peruvian people, that time I gathered in Rome,” he added.
Pope Francis died this Monday, one day after his last appearance in public coinciding with the Sunday of Resurrection in which he looked out to the main balcony of the Basilica of San Pedro to impart the blessing ‘Urbi et Orbi’. Your funeral will be held this Saturday.
