Bogotá, May 1 (EFE) .- The governments of Colombia and Spain will hold a meeting of the high-level commission headed by the foreign ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Andean country will hold on Thursday.
The celebration of the meeting was announced after a meeting held in Bogotá the Colombian vice chancellor Daniel Ávila, and the Secretary of State for Latin America, the Caribbean and the Spanish in the world, Susana Sumelzo, “in which they reaffirmed the relationship of strategic partners that unites Colombia and Spain.”
“During the meeting, the realization of the high-level commission was confirmed, which will be chaired by the foreign ministers in October 2025, with the aim of highlighting the multiple common work areas, the result of the political subcommittees; economic and commercial; cultural and educational; scientific and technological and legal-consular,” said the Foreign Ministry in a statement in which it did not mention where it will be carried out.
At the meeting in Bogotá, Sumelzo reaffirmed the political support of Spain to Colombia “in the field of peace, reiterating its support, both through bilateral cooperation addressed to the country, and in multilateral spaces, where the support of the international community represents a priority for Colombia.”
“Both countries agreed to carry out an initiative that makes Spanish visible as a language of peace, remembering the shared values between both regions,” added the information.
At the meeting, “the important presence of Spanish companies in Colombia” was highlighted, where there are more than 800 companies that generate thousands of jobs, as well as the “dynamic flow of foreign direct investment” that makes Spain, the second country that destines more resources to Colombia after the United States.
According to the Bank of the Republic (monetary authority), the countries that made more foreign direct investment in Colombia in 2024 were the United States, with 5,508 million dollars; Spain (2,793 million); Anguilla (1,580 million), (Panama 1,199 million) and Switzerland (575 million).
“On the other hand, the shared vision of migration was highlighted as an opportunity for development, the valuable contribution of the Colombian diaspora to the Spanish economy and the successful circular migration model that both countries implement,” the statement added.
According to the Foreign Ministry, “Colombia presented the actions that national entities advance in a coordinated manner to contribute to safe, orderly and regular migration towards the 29 countries of the Schengen space, including Spain, as well as to raise awareness about the proper use of the asylum figure.”
The two officials also talked about the IV Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU), which will be held in the Colombian city of Santa Marta, on November 9 and 10, and “coincided in the strategic nature of this meeting for both regions and the importance of achieving specific results.” EFE
