According to municipal sources, from the Consistory, in collaboration with associations and NGOs, at least 70% of homeless people who sleep in the river have mental or addiction problems. Therefore, from the municipal government they ensure that these people often reject the alternatives offered from social services.
The provinces published this Friday that the number of tents installed in the old channel of Turia already exceeds the hundred. From the Valencia City Council, it is ensured that they have been working with other social entities for some time to try to find a solution for these people. From the Consistory they point out that this work requires interdisciplinary resources because in many occasions these people reject the alternatives that are proposed to them.
From the Consistory they ensure that some of the profiles that are currently sleeping in the river have been given accommodation in places such as the Order San Juan de Dios or the Caes of the Red Cross, but from both places it was expelled for misconduct. That is why from the Great House they speak of “complexity of the profiles” to which the Social Services and the X4 of the Local Police (Unit specialized in the homeless) who work constantly with the people who stay in the river face.
In the same way, regarding the obvious increase that has experienced the number of homeless people who sleep in the gardens that cross Valencia, the Valencia City Council indicated that the Dana has also been able to play its role. In recent months it has been seen that many of these people have moved there from the metropolitan area because they feel “safer” in the city.
To all this, it would also be added, according to the City Council, the selfless help of the people. «With good intentions, many people yield tents and distribute food to the homeless people of the river. These, which to receive must commit to treat their addictions, prefer to remain in the river and survive with the solidarity of third parties than try to look for alternatives, ”said municipal sources.
Therefore, the City Council defends its work in social services, and ensures that the municipality houses an average of 1,000 people in a situation of withouthogarism. In addition, from the Consistory they ensure that it works to increase the number of places with various means.
On the one hand, the Consistory has extended the agreement with the Red Cross entity to promote the opening of the CAES of Santacruz de Tenerife, continuously, 365 days a year, in addition to projecting its extension with the adjacent ship that will double its capacity.
