The Catholic University of Santa María It has announced an ambitious electric train project that aims to revolutionize the public transport system in Arequipa. With an estimated investment of 350 million dollars, this initiative aims to reduce vehicular congestion and environmental pollution in the acquaintance ‘White City‘.
The “Mass Transportation, Arequipa Electric Train” project will take place over 23.6 kilometers and will have 17 stations. Dr. Renato Díaz Galdós, dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental and Environmental Engineering, stressed that the train route will start at the Granger Station and conclude in the old South Railroad Stationwhich will allow more agile access to the Historic Center of Arequipa.
The innovative transport system in Arequipa: “The White Train”
The electric train system will be designed to leave every 10 minutes, using seven trains of six wagons each, with capacity for 1,200 passengers per trip. The investment of US $ 13 million per kilometer totals US $ 350 million for its implementation, with a construction period of 730 calendar days.

It is estimated that more than 369 thousand people from districts such as Cerro Colorado, Yanahuara and Tiabaya will benefit directly from the new system. The proposal seeks to offer an electric, modern and safe urban transport, which reduces travel time by 50% compared to the current system.
A solution to vehicular chaos in Arequipa
The provincial mayor of Arequipa, Ing. Víctor Hugo Rivera Chávez, stressed the importance of listening to experts in search of solutions for the vehicular chaos. The implementation of this transport system is a step towards improving the quality of life of Arequipa citizens.
The electric train is expected not only to improve mobility, but also generate a positive impact on the regional economy. By reducing the displacement time, it is projected that citizens can devote more time to productive activities, thus contributing to the economic dynamism of Arequipa.
Project to execute the electrical transport system is in commission
The bill that promotes the construction of the system Mass electric transport in Arequipa – The white train – was presented to Congress. The needs for which it should be declared of national interest were exposed. It should be noted that the project involves the Regional Government of Arequipa and the Provincial Municipality of Arequipa in coordination with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
