The world power evaluates technically recoverable resources of 35.8 billion cubic feet of gas and 28 million barrels of oil in two formations under a large part of the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, specifically from Texas to Florida.

The American body informs that since the exploration began in the area, Hoston and Travis Peak formations have produced 8 billion cubic feet of natural gas, as well as 126 million barrels of oil.
Much of the recoverable natural gas estimated in the formations is what the industry calls “shale gas“: Natural gas trapped in low permeability rock, well below the surface.
“Producing shale gas here would imply drilling and fracturing more than 2400-3000 meters deep“said Christopher Schenk, a Geologist of the USGS.
Although the study area extends from the border with Mexico, along the Gulf of Mexico to most Florida, the resources are concentrated in a strip that extends from the Southeast Texasby the center of Louisiana, through the Delta del Missisipi and even the state waters of Louisiana.
