The Secretary of Civil Protection of Veracruz, Guadalupe Osorno Maldonado, confirmed that at least two complaints were filed for forest fires generated intentionally during 2024.
Unlike the current season, he explained that last year there were elements that indicated the intentionality in some of the registered accidents.
“In this season we have not had elements to assume that fires are caused with intentionality. Last year,” said Osorno.
According to the official, in 2024, clear evidence of deliberate provocation was identified, which motivated the presentation of complaints before the corresponding authorities.
“There was evidence that there was intentionality; the corresponding complaints were put and it is a matter of the prosecutors to follow up,” he said.
The Ministry of Civil Protection followed two cases, while the Ministry of Environment (Sedema) filed other additional complaints. However, Osorno acknowledged that the progress in these investigations depends exclusively on the authorities in charge of the prosecution of justice.
“That is a topic that is justified to the investigating authorities,” he said.
The official also pointed out the difficulty of monitoring large natural areas such as the Perote chest, where several fires usually originate.
“We are talking about 100, 200 or 500 hectares. There are multiple accesses and you cannot have absolute control, which complicates research and surveillance processes,” he concluded.
