The coastal coach, the Mexican Miguel Herrera, stressed the importance of the friendly match of May 28 against the selection of Catalonia as part of the preparation for the World Cup and the Gold Cup qualifiers.
“It will be a very important game because it will be the opportunity to close the group with the local players and some of those who are outside that will have the possibility of arriving. And by the time we return, and to be clear who will be the 26 players who participate in the two eliminatory games and then in the Gold Cup,” Herrera said on the page of the Costa Rican Football Federation (FCRF).
The coach expressed his thanks to the Catalan team for having taken Costa Rica into account to play the game on May 28 at the Johan Cruyff stadium, as part of the celebrations for the 125th anniversary of the Catalan Football Federation (FCF).
“There are very interesting players in that selection and for us it will be important to have a rival of that level,” said Herrera.
The match will be played outside the official date of the FIFA for friendly matches, so the clubs are not obliged to give up soccer players, before which the selection of Costa Rica will be made up of players of the local league and some of international leagues that have finished the season.
This will be the second time that both teams face. The first was on May 24, 2006 with Catalan Victoria 2-0, in a match played at the Olimpic Stadium in Terrassa and served Costa Rica as part of its preparation for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The Costa Rican team, led by Mexican Miguel Herrera, will travel to Barcelona on May 25 and will return to San José on the 29th, in order to continue preparing for the matches of the Concacaf Qualifiers of the 2026 World Cup with Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago, which are played in June, as well as for the Gold Cup, which will take place from June 14 to July 6.
