BALTIMORE — Gunnar Henderson homered leading off the first inning and the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 2-0 on Monday in the opener of a four-game series.

Grayson Rodríguez pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings for Baltimore, which won the first meeting of the season between the top two teams in the American League East Division. He hasn’t allowed a run in 12 innings against the Yankees and tied his career best with 101 pitches.

New York left 10 men on base and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

Henderson hit a 2-2 knuckle curve over the wall against Clarke Schmidt (2-1). It was Henderson’s 10th home run, tying Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels for the major league lead.

With the homer, Henderson tied Chris Davis (2013) and Manny Machado (2018) for the third most in April in Orioles history.

Danny Coulombe got three outs for his first save.

For the Yankees, Venezuelan Gleyber Torres is 4-2. Dominican Juan Soto 4-1.
