Giro d’Italia 2024 – Preview stage 3 – International Cycling

By @amatiz12

Novara Fossano (166km)

First mass sprint after two partial periods of suffering for the fastest.

All flat in the transition, except for a small categorized tack in the first hour and a half.

The relevant part begins 5 km from the closure, as there is a 2000 meter segment at 5% with four curves and a roundabout. Although it is true that it is far from eliminating the packers, it is going to reduce their reserves and even more so when the proximity to the finish line and technical challenges will force the peloton to go at a thousand.

The good news is that after that, the only remaining difficulty is a sharp left turn located 1.3 km from the finish, which almost guarantees a clean finish with such a long straight.

Climate

Rain. The wet road will alter the definition.

Scenery

The legs are fresh, it is an easy route and it is the first opportunity for a very prominent line-up of sprinters, so there is no chance for a breakaway.

Due to the type of finish, the purest sprinters may have extra complications, while those with more endurance will benefit since their engine will not wear out as much with that slope in the final kilometers. In addition to this, it is confirmed that the packaging will be by force due to the fact that there are no curves at the end, which incidentally reduces opportunities for those who take advantage of the chaos to supply those missing watts in those seconds of maximum power.

Of course, water can be a decisive factor, especially when approaching the sprint, because with high-speed cornering, no matter how much you push upwards, someone or another can crash or land. It also applies to the men in the general classification, who must be alert and hope that luck is on their side.

Favorites

Tim Merlier – A priori, the one with the best condition and the best launching train.

Fabio Jakobsen – Gray year, although confidence was gained in Türkiye. His partner Lund Andersen is an interesting alternative if he fails.

Jonathan Milan – The most versatile among the candidates and one of those who best suits his arrival.

Kaden Groves – He won with rain in the last edition.

Olav Kooij – He has the luxury of being launched by Laporte, we will see how diminished he is from his fall.

Phil Bauhaus – He needs a more chaotic sprint to prevail.

Fernando Gaviria – Far from splendor to be a threat.

Sebastian Molano – With the challenge of taking the next leap. It will cost you placement.

Biniam Girmay – Having a more endurance sprint can help you improve on the standing meter.

Caleb Ewan – Its shape is unknown, a reserved forecast.

Alberto Dainese – He usually takes advantage of the volatas when the race is more advanced. It’s still very early.

Danny Van Poppel – He has already shown why he performs as a thrower and not as a sprinter…

David Dekker – It is difficult to stand out with so much competition.

Max Kanter – Top-10.

Prediction

Milan will be the fastest in Fossano.
