Profile of Adriano Panatta, the last Italian to conquer Rome

Adriano Panatta He is one of the greatest legends in the history of Italian tennis. She was professional during 14 seasons, between 1969 and 1983, having achieved countless records for tennis in his country.

Panatta conquered a total de 10 ATP titles in singles and 17 in doubles. Until the arrival of Jannik Sinner, he was considered the best tennis player azzurri of history.

Some of his milestones were being No. 4 in the world, winning a Grand Slam, having the record of titles for Italian tennis in singles and winning the Davis Cup with his country.

However, Sinner was responsible for equaling and even surpassing these achievements. The 22-year-old already has 13 titles, reached the No. 2 position in the ATP ranking and achieved the second Silver Salad Bowl for his country after 47 years.

The most important trophy in Panatta’s career was Roland Garros 1976, after beating the American Harold Solomon 6-1, 6-4, 4-6 and 7-6, after saving a match point in the first round.

In addition to being able to say that he is a Grand Slam champion, he has a record that nothing and no one can take away from him, not even Sinner. He was the only tennis player to beat Bjorn Borg in the Parisian tournament and he did it twice (1973 and 1976).

He is approaching Rome Masters 1000, where it remains the last local champion (1976). On that occasion, he defeated the Argentine Guillermo Vilas in the final by 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 and 7-6 (1). Can they take that record away from him? It no longer depends on Sinner…
