Edwuin Cetré, the Colombian Brownie Kevin

dafter his passing through Rocha from Uruguay and Santos Laguna from Mexico, Edwuin Cetré had difficult moments in Junior de Barranquilla and much happier in Independiente Medellín. But now, with good performance and prominence in Estudiantes de La Plata in Argentina, he has become a special character and his humor has given us a lot to talk about.

Although much attention has been paid to the effectiveness of taking penalties, Whether with power or by hitting it as happened recently, the great goal that emulated Kevin de Bruyne’s goal with Manchester City against Crystal Palace was the one who gave rise to the joke in which he called himself ‘Kevin from Brownie’ and made the joke about his skin color comparing himself to the Belgian:

I got burned… It’s too white for (me) to be Kevin de Bruyne (laughs)… It’s not Kevin de Bruyne, it’s ‘Kevin de Brownie’ (laughs)

After a 2023 with 21 goals in 65 games with Independiente Medellín, helping to achieve the subtitle of the BetPlay League 2-2023At the beginning of 2024, the great opportunity to reach Estudiantes de La Plata arose and the adaptation was no problem. With the gaucho team he has played 20 games this year, scoring 4 goals and contributing to the Argentine League Cup title.

Because of this regularity, Cetré has entered into Néstor Lorenzo’s consideration to be part of the 2024 Copa Américasince he himself confessed in an interview with ‘El Vbar’ on Caracol Radio that he is in a chat group with the 55 shortlisted for the competition:

I was in the group, but there are almost 60 of them, we are there until the list comes out and when the list comes out they will eliminate those who do not take into account… I am in the group, there is not much talk, they just put you in, they let you know of the call and everything, we no longer have to wait for the list

Of course, with his usual sincerity and no-mysteries attitude, Edwuin referred to what it means to compete with players who are in European leagues: “I don’t know, I’m working quietly, I also have to understand that they have their process that they have been going through and they have shown that they deserve to be there. Let’s not lie to ourselves, but Europe kills Argentina and whatever, we have to wait and see What does the teacher say?. But the winger, a specialist in taking penalties, has faith in his performance: “Let it be God’s will and whatever has to happen happens”.

Of course, the one born in the city of Cali referred to the dream of reaching the old continent at the age of 26: “I’m comfortable, very happy, but my dream has always been to play in Europe, that’s there. I will continue doing my job here, but if the opportunity comes to go to Europe, it will be a dream come true”.

Edwuin Cetré on racism and comments about Vinícius Júnior

Well, just as he is direct when talking about other topics, racism is one of those that Edwuin Cetré faces in a different way and in this regard he was asked about the attitude he had when he made the ‘Kevin from Brownie’ comment, referring to his skin color and the comparison with the Manchester City player:

I have always (I have had that mood) and in Colombia we are like that. I talked to people from Colombia and they labeled me that Vinícius was crying because they had called him ‘black’ and I don’t know what else. Then the ‘Kevin from Brownie’ thing comes up and that comparison, but we are different people, maybe he has had a worse time or pays more attention to that

But the most controversial and discussed thing about this topic came when they compared his attitude with that of Vinícius Júnior at Real Madrid and his fight against racist comments in Spain. And to give context, when the particular episode of the comparison with the Belgian occurred, also ‘Vini’s’ press conference took place with the Brazilian National Team and his tears over that episode.

Well, in the interview with Caracol Radio, Edwuin Cetré gave his point of view without filters and without hiding his position in these situations:

I don’t care, they yell ‘black’ or whatever on the court, but I’m not going to pay attention to it. I am focused on mine and we started to discuss it in the group (of Students). One picks it up to pick it up (joking), but I don’t take it the wrong way, it’s normal

Being a situation that is handled delicately and with great sensitivity, the Colombian’s statements have been taken from different perspectives and, Surely, a response will also come from Europe for Cetré’s attitude. But he has always been like that and is consistent with his way of seeing life.
