NEW YORK — Trent Grisham homered and drove in three runs, doubling his totals in both categories, and the New York Yankees completed a season sweep of the Minnesota Twins, winning 8-5 on Thursday for their eighth straight victory.
The bad news for the Yankees was that their Dominican slugger Juan Soto had to leave the game due to discomfort in his left forearm after a 56-minute rain delay before the sixth inning.
Venezuelan Gleyber Torres hit a two-run double to first base for the Yankees (45-19), who broke the tie with Philadelphia for the best record in the majors. They are 25-6 in their last 31 games and extended their best streak since nine wins in June 2022.
They will receive the weekend against Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaders of the American League West, in a long-awaited interleague duel.
“I think we’re going to have a tremendous atmosphere,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
Carlos Correa homered and drove in two runs for Minnesota. Christan Vázquez, batting ninth, also disappeared for the Twins.
After starter Marcus Stroman couldn’t hold a 7-2 lead after four innings, Luke Weaver (4-1) earned the victory with 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Clay Holmes got three outs for his 18th saved.
Venezuelan Pablo López (5-6) took the loss on a night in which the right-hander walked six, the highest total of his career.
For the Twins, Correa went 2 for 4, one scored and two RBIs. José Miranda, also from Puerto Rico, is 4-1.
For the Yankees, Soto 1-0, one scored. Torres 1 for 4, two RBIs.
