The Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana, of the Movistar team, dropped out before the third stage of the Tour of Switzerland after detecting a fracture in his right hand after the fall he suffered on Monday during the second stage of the competition.

Quintana went down on Monday and suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fourth metacarpal of his right hand, confirmed in subsequent radiological tests carried out by the Spanish squad.

“Yesterday I had the fall, I tried to escape, in the end I fell in the grass. I didn’t get any scratches or anything, in fact I haven’t even scratched my hand, but something hit me in the bone and I fractured my hand. I am out of competition, but I am back to training hard and returning to the races to come,” Nairo commented in one of his Instagram stories.

The Colombian cyclist will continue treatment and will not start the third stage on Tuesday to begin his recovery as soon as possible, with a view to competing in the next Tour de France, between June 29 and July 21.

Nairo had just had a good participation in the 2024 Giro d’Italia, a race that concluded in 19th position, in what was his return to a Grand Tour after being disqualified from the 2022 Tour and being without a team during 2023. His injury in Switzerland She is not the first to suffer this year.

Last April, during the Tour of Catalonia, the rider from Boyacá also suffered a hard fall and shortly after it was learned that in the impact he broke the anterior sterno-clavicular ligament of his right arm. Fortunately he recovered in time to compete in the Giro.
