LAS VEGAS (AP) — Conor McGregor, who for years was the main face of the UFC, is injured and will not be able to participate in the June 29 show in Las Vegas, where he was headlining the card.

Dana White, the president of the UFC, announced the change on Thursday through the social network mixed.

McGregor was scheduled to clash with Michael Chandler, the sixth lightweight challenger, but a first sign of trouble emerged on June 3, when his press conference in Dublin was abruptly cancelled.

No explanation has been given as to why. White did not provide details on the nature of McGregor’s injury.

Losing McGregor, who hasn’t fought in the Octagon in three years, is a blow to the UFC. At 35 years old, the gladiator is no longer in his best condition, but he is still an attraction at the box office and in sales of broadcasts through pay-per-view.

The UFC is at a crossroads. Stars like McGregor, Jon Jones and Amanda Nunes are nearing the end of their careers or have already retired.

There is a group of young fighters who continue to gain followers. The UFC relies on that new generation to maintain its popularity.
