This Saturday, American Bryson DeChambeau became the leader of the United States Open, the third major of the golf season and which will conclude its 124th edition this Sunday.

Winner of the US Open in 2020 and now a member of the controversial Saudi LIV Golf, DeChambeau excelled on the third day with 67 strokes (-3 with six birdies, one bogey and a double bogey) for a cumulative -7 that He leaves alone and in front of the tournament with only one round remaining.

The American has a cushion of three shots over a group of pursuers with -4 in total: the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy (-1 in the third round), the Frenchman Matthieu Pavon (-1) and the American Patrick Cantlay (even).

The Swede Ludvig Åberg, who had landed in first position at the weekend, got stuck with a +3 this Saturday that leaves him with -2 in total before the last day.

A -2 after three rounds is also presented by the Japanese Hideki Matsuyama, who achieved par this Saturday.

The one who raises his head is the American Scottie Scheffler, number one in the world ranking and double winner of the Augusta Masters (2022 and 2024) who started as a favorite for this ‘great’ but who is putting in a very lackluster performance.

After making the weekend cut after a thousand and one problems, Scheffler continued his disappointing participation at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (North Carolina, USA) with a +1 this Saturday (two birdies and three bogeys ) for a +6 in total that places it in position 42, far from the best.

Experts pointed to three favorites before starting the tournament: Scheffler; a McIlroy who has lived up to expectations and who remains with options for final victory; and the American Xander Schauffele, who without reaching the collapse of Scheffler also finds it practically impossible to conquer this ‘major’ (+2 this Saturday, +1 total).

As for the Spanish representation, Sergio García and David Puig, both enrolled in LIV Golf, have been in charge of filling the gap in this ‘great’ left by the resignation of their compatriot Jon Rahm, who has not been able to compete in this Open from the USA due to an injury that had already caused him to leave LIV Houston last week.

Thus, García presents an accumulated +1 after a +1 this Saturday that places him tied with three other golfers in 12th position in the classification, although with no title options except for a last-minute miracle (DeChambeau takes a total of eight strokes off him).

For his part, Puig, who on Friday with a great comeback certified his qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to represent Spain alongside Rahm, continued with very good feelings and a -1 this Saturday that leaves him with +3 in the total (20th place).

The two Latin golfers who continue in the US Open had worse luck in this third round: the Argentine Emiliano Grillo (+3 on Saturday for +5 in total) and the Colombian Nico Echavarría (+8 in the third round for +9 accumulated). EFE
