ARLINGTON, Texas — Leody Taveras broke the tie with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Texas Rangers, who did not have a hit until the sixth, beat the Texas Rangers 5-3 on Wednesday. New York Mets, to end their seven-game winning streak.
Taveras did not even start the game, after a bad streak with the wood. He came on as a substitute in center field in the top of the seventh inning.
He had hit just five hits in 59 at-bats (.085) during his last 18 games, until he hit his home run between right and center field off reliever Drew Smith (1-1).
Texas, champion of the most recent World Series, ended a five-game losing streak and avoided being swept in consecutive series. The Rangers are still nine games behind AL West-leading Seattle, which swept them in three games over the weekend.
Pete Alonso hit his 16th home run for New York, whose streak was the best he had achieved all season. The Mets had won 11 of their previous 13 games.
Dominican José Ureña (3-5) pitched two scoreless innings and Kirby Yates perfectly completed the ninth to reach 11 saves in the same number of opportunities.
