This Sunday it was announced who will dispense justice in the match between Argentina and Chile, on Tuesday (at 10 p.m. Argentine time) at the Met Life stadium in New Jersey for the second date of group A of the Copa América. The main referee will be Uruguayan Andrés Matonte.

Matonte is 36 years old and has been international since 2019. He directed Boca six times, River three, Estudiantes twice and Defensa twice (then there are several with one occasion such as Racing and Central, among others) in international competitions. It will be his first time with the National Team.

He was a World Cup player in 2022: he directed the 4-1 between Croatia and Canada. In that same year, he was in the eye of the storm by Estudiantes fans in the elimination of the Libertadores quarterfinals (vs. Paranaense) for disallowing a goal due to interpretive offside. In 2023 he refereed other Argentine teams in key instances: the return of River vs. Inter de Porto Alegre (elimination on penalties for Millo) in the Libertadores round of 16, the 0-0 between Racing and Boca (Almirón’s team went through on penalties) in the quarterfinals and the 1-1 of Xeneize (qualified for the final by shots from the twelve steps) in Brazil. And in 2024 he was present in eight games for Libertadores and one for Sudamericana.

Bully in Boca vs. Pereira in 2023.

He will be supported by Nicolás Tarán and Carlos Barreiro as assistants, Gustavo Tejera will be the fourth and Pablo Llarena the fifth (all from Uruguay). Carlos Orbe from Ecuador will be on the VAR, helped by his compatriot Christian Lescano.
