Aston Martin F1 working “full speed to solve problems”

The 2024 Formula 1 season is developing in a very different way from last year in the Aston Martin team, since The Silverstone team is far from the positions it occupied at the beginning of 2023. Those in green added several podiums thanks to Fernando Alonso, although with the current car they have no chance of popping the champagne.

One of those who could reverse the situation is the engineering director, Tom McCulloughwho spoke to the media at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and explained that it was all a “relative game”because the rest also introduce updates to their cars: “I think that since the beginning of the year, we could see some limitations that are making it difficult for us. We have been working on it since then, we take parts to almost all the races, both mechanics as well as aerodynamics to help with those setbacks.

“The parts we have used in the last few races have been much better for that, and this is really a better test,” he said of the qualifying result, where they were eleventh. “On this type of circuit, I think if we had had the car we had at the beginning of the year, we would have fought to be, I think, in Q2, four and a half tenths off the best time.”

Nevertheless, Nobody wants to stop developing their tools to better reach the end of the course: “No one is not developing, no one is standing still. We are relatively happy, but it is only relatively because it is not where we want to be, with the two Alpines ahead of us, by very small margins.”

“There are things that we know we have to address, and the good thing right now is that when we are bringing pieces to the court those issues are being addressed, it is a relative game,” he continued. “I think we know what we’re trying to achieve, it’s quite difficult, and that’s the bottom line, both mechanically and aerodynamically.”

“We are working flat out to bring updates as soon as we can to resolve the issues,” Tom McCullough confirmed. “Sometimes it’s good to look back at older races and compare them with other data, not just lap time, because there are other factors that play a role, but just pure downforce, everything is moving so quickly that it’s “just a relative game.”

“Our car, with the DRS features and efficiency now, is a world different from last year, but it doesn’t matter, it’s just like a relative improvement, and we work very hard at the factory, and we’re starting to see the benefits. benefits of that,” he said. “So I think, from Bahrain until now, and from now until the end of the season, we have all the potential to make some relative gains compared to what we have been able to do in the past.
