NEW YORK — Mark Vientos hit a pair of home runs and the New York Mets withstood a furious attack by the New York Yankees to win 9-7 on Tuesday in the first Subway Series game of the season.

The Mets thus achieved their eleventh victory in their last 14 games.

Vientos opened the second and fourth innings with home runs against Gerrit Cole (0-1). For the first time in his career he hit more than one home run in a game.

He became the 12th Mets player with at least two home runs in a Subway Series game.

Vientos had the opportunity to match the feat of Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor, who hit three home runs against the Yankees on September 12, 2021, but he hit for a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning and struck out in the seventh.

Dominican Dedniel Nuñez (1-0) worked two and two-thirds innings as a reliever, with a one-hitter, and the Mets improved to a record of 38-39.

The Yankees (52-29), leaders of the American League East Division, have won only one of their last six series.

For the Yankees, Dominican Juan Soto was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Venezuelan Gleyber Torres 4-0. Mexican Alex Verdugo 4-0.

For the Mets, Puerto Rican Lindor was 2-for-5 with one run scored. Venezuelan Francisco Álvarez was 1-for-2.
