Good feelings for Alejandro Tabilo (24th in the world) prior to Wimbledon, third Grand Slam of the season. In just two games he is already in the semifinals of the ATP 250 in Mallorca, in Spain.
The Chilean defeated Jakub Mensik (85th), an 18-year-old Czech promise, by a double 6-4 after one hour and 30 minutes of a match where he once again played at a good level.
The first round was quite even and with both players firm with their serves. Tabilo had a break chance in the fourth game, but his opponent saved with an ace. And when it seemed that the set would be decided in a tiebreak, the Venezuelan broke in the tenth game after a spectacular return with a parallel forehand winner.
In the second episode things were more complicated for the Canadian-born left-hander, because he delivered his delivery for the first time in the fifth game, while in the next he missed two break points. However, Horacio Matta’s pupil managed to break in the eighth to even the actions, while in the next he raised a key break point, because in the tenth he broke again, after a double fault from the Czech, to seal the victory.
With this triumph advanced in Mallorca to his first ATP semi-final on grass surface and for the fifth time this season to a round of four best. In addition, he will reach his best historical ranking, climbing from 24th place to 22nd, very close to displacing his compatriot NIcolás Jarry (19th) of Chile’s number one.
In search of the final he will face the winner of the key between the Frenchman Gael Monfils and the Spanish Roberto Bautista Agut.
