In Paris 2024, Stan Wawrinka will be an Olympian again

Stanislas Wawrinka ha received an invitation from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and will be part of the Swiss team who will compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games that will be held from July 26 to August 11.

The 39-year-old tennis player will play his third parties Games after Beijing 2008, where she won the gold medal in doubles with Roger Federer, and London 2012.

Wawrinka, who was ranked as high as No. 3 in the world in 2014, was absent from Rio 2016 with a back injury and Tokyo 2020 while recovering from surgery on his left foot.

The International Federation has responded to the request of the Swiss team and Wawrinka, just like his compatriot Viktorija Golubic, silver in doubles in 2020, they will be part of the Swiss delegation of more than 80 athletes in Paris.

Wawrinka will return to Roland Garros, the scene of the tennis competition in Paris 2024 and where he won, in 2015, one of the three Grand Slams that his record contains along with the 2016 United States Open and the 2014 Australian Open.

In the final stretch of his career, Wawrinka will play in the individual draw of the competition. Currently ranked 87th in the ATP rankings, he will be Switzerland’s only representative in the men’s singles.

The tennis player from Lausanne, who in 2012 was the standard bearer of his country, was included in the team that the Swiss Olympic Committee made public this Thursday thanks to one of the invitations granted by the International Tennis Federation for his status as a Grand Slam winner. The other wild card was awarded days ago to the British Andy Murray.

Wawrinka, who did not gain access to the Olympic tournament directly due to his merits and his classification so far this season, will fulfill his wish thanks to this invitation. Her compatriot Golubic will also play some games, in the women’s tournament, for the second time in her career after Tokyo 2021, where she won silver in doubles with Belinda Bencic.
