SAG-AFTRA could go on strike if publishers do not accept protections against AI

The actors union SAG-AFTRA has stated that a strike could be imminent if major video game companies do not agree to implement robust protections against the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The controversy revolves around growing concerns that AI could be used abusively, negatively affecting voice actors and other industry professionals.

During negotiations, SAG-AFTRA has insisted on the need for agreements that protect its members from the creation and use of digital replicas without consent or adequate compensation. A recent example is the agreement with Replica Studios, which allows game developers to access the work of union members under terms deemed fair and ethical by SAG-AFTRA. However, this agreement has been criticized by several voice actors who fear that their voices could be used without their control in the future.

The union seeks to ensure that any use of AI technology in the creation of digital content respects the rights and integrity of the actors. This includes ensuring that actors are appropriately compensated and that their explicit consent is obtained before their voices or images are used in AI-powered projects.

If an agreement is not reached, prominent companies such as Activision, EA, Insomniac Games and Warner Bros. Games could be affected by the strike, which would have a significant impact on the production and release of new video games. The strike could also influence public perception of these companies and their commitment to fair and ethical labor practices.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, national executive director and chief negotiator of SAG-AFTRA, has stated that while the union does not want to strike, they will not accept agreements that do not adequately protect their members against abusive uses of AI. This strong stance underscores the importance of the issue to industry professionals, who see AI as both an opportunity and a potential threat.

The situation remains tense and the possibility of a strike depends on the response of video game companies to the union’s demands. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether an agreement can be reached that satisfies both parties and avoids significant disruption to the video game industry.
