Nikon has launched the Z6 III to an impressively positive reception, although it has left some fans wondering what happened to the Z7 III – the Z6 II and Z7 II (currently $2,296.95 on Amazon) were released together, after all . A tentative list of the Nikon Z7 III’s alleged specs has leaked on Weibo (via New Camera), giving us a possible idea of what we can expect from Nikon’s next generation of premium full-frame cameras.

Keeping in mind that these leaked specs are tentative at best – and that some, like the ultra-high resolution, seem almost completely far-fetched – here are some highlights of the supposedly upcoming Nikon Z7 III (machine translations):

  • Accelerated FX format 90.75 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor.
  • 10.Mode 1 with cross-superpixel packing for better low-light performance.
  • 8-stop in-body image stabilization.
  • Capture 14-bit RAW photos at 14 fps continuous with mechanical shutter.
  • 12-bit N-RAW video up to: 8K 60fps (with crop), 4K 120fps, 12K 30fps (without crop).

The leak also makes mention of an updated dual-axis articulating display and a bright EVF – likely the same 5.67K-dot, 12Hz, 4,000-nit EVF found in the recent Nikon Z6 III. Supposedly, the Nikon Z7 III will also be able to boost its already considerable resolution even further with a pixel-shifting high-resolution mode.

For ease of use, the Z7 III will also reportedly feature Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi 6, along with dual card slots supporting CF Express and UHS-II SD cards. The autofocus is also expected to receive an upgrade with a dual-stream AF system with the same autofocus algorithms as the flagship Z8 and Z9 cameras.

For now, the price and release date of the Nikon Z7 III are unclear, but those details will likely come to light closer to launch time. It’s curious that Nikon didn’t release the updated Z7 III alongside the new Z6 III, as the second-generation full-frame cameras were previously unveiled at the same event. That said, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Z7 III were released soon and saw a significant price increase, just like the Z6 III.
