State of Decay 2 immortalizes a player’s deceased father as a playable character: “I’m not crying, you’re crying”

In another example of the good relationship between video game developers and their community, an emotional story has come to light, which revolves around State of Decay 2, a survival game published in May 2018. According to a shared publication On Reddit, a dev from Undead Labs, the studio responsible for the title, honored the memory of a player’s deceased father by including him as a playable character within the title.

The screenshot attached in the post shows a playable character named Bruce Allen Buncombe who, according to his in-game characteristics, ran a medical office before the zombie apocalypse, led a quiet life and is “old and tired.” All qualities that he supposedly shared with his real-world counterpart.

The user shared this touching anecdote earlier this week on Reddit, with a post titled: “My dad passed away 3 years ago. “I found it in the game.” In this thread he explains that, shortly after his father’s death three years ago, he contacted Undead Labs to tell them his story. “They did what they could at the time, which was add his name to some random survivors,” the player commented. “Three years later, I found him. Not just his name, but his features, everything about him. This will always be my definitive community.”

In a later comment, the player thanked the studio for having “immortalized” his father. “We may grow old and forget this game (I highly doubt it), but no matter what happens, he will always be a part of it,” he said. “I’m not crying, you’re crying,” he said in the studio shortly afterward. “We’re glad you found him,” they said.

Something that aligns with the lore of State of Decay, since for some players this saga has a strange charge of sadness, where heartbreaking backstories are revealed during travels in this post-apocalyptic world. And furthermore, at its core, its main plot is about holding on to hope and remembering those who have gone, something that is reinforced by this beautiful gesture.

World of Warcraft, another game that has honored the memory of a deceased player

This emotional story reminds us of a similar one from World of Warcraft, where after the death of Caylee Dak, a player who succumbed to leukemia, in an emotional gesture Blizzard, the game’s developer, decided to immortalize her memory within the virtual world of Azeroth. .

This character was added with the arrival of Patch 2.3 and represents 28-year-old Dak Krause, who died in 2007 due to leukemia. Caylee Dak’s story reached Blizzard’s ears thanks to Alicia, one of her best friends in the game. Moved by her loss, Alicia decided to write a poem in honor of her friend and contacted Blizzard to see if it was possible to incorporate it into World of Warcraft in some way. Blizzard’s response far exceeded Alicia’s expectations.
