Speed: The main reason to get Wi-Fi 6 is data transfer speed. Under ideal conditions, a Wi-Fi 6 network has a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 9.6 Gbps. while Wi-Fi 5 only supports up to 6.9 Gbps. But that’s not all: another of the wide range of technological innovations introduced by the new protocol is that it uses a higher order modulation scheme with 1024-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation), which represents 1 symbol with up to 10 bits, compared to Wi-Fi 5’s 256-QAM, which represents 1 symbol with 8 bits. The result is that with more bits carried per symbol, the data rate increases by up to 25%.
Features: It’s not just about a faster Wi-Fi connection, Wi-Fi 6 also adds features to make our increasingly online lives a little easier. Many of these features require Wi-Fi 6-enabled devices to take full advantage of the improvements, meaning the new protocol will become more useful as new compatible devices are released.
Coverage: Unlike Wi-Fi 5, which uses only the faster 5.0 GHz frequency, Wi-Fi 6 also uses the 2.4 GHz frequency range, which does not transmit as much information as 5.0 GHz signals, but has a longer range and can more easily pass through small obstacles.
