PS5 players are already waiting for the landing of the big releases of the console in the remainder of 2024, with AstroBot like the big name on the calendar right now; and it is no wonder, since playing it has left us with excellent impressions. However, there are already those who are looking to the future and while waiting for the announcement of PS5 Pro, eyes are already focused on the next generations of Sony, which could mean the end of an era.

At least that’s what the analyst says. Mat Piscatella of NPD Group, who assures through his X (Twitter) profile that Sony has one generation left – the PS6 – with physical games. Therefore, bet that the arrival of PS7 will occur digitallyremoving the physical format from the equation and adapting to other formats as has happened with streaming platforms in film and television. Obviously, this is just one speculation and we will have to see what is included in Sony’s plans for the future.

Even so, it must be taken into account that the arrival of PS6 is anticipated for some time to be determined in 2028, so PS7 landing could extend until 2035 or 2036. This puts us in a decade-long environment, where technology may have advanced enough to allow the world of video games to evolve in the way the analyst mentions.

Nintendo would take a little longer to make this leap to digital

This process is already being seen with Xbox in some territories, so Mat Piscatella considers that both Microsoft and Sony will be the first to implement them in the video game sector. For his part, in relation to the third largest company in the industry, he assures that Nintendo would take a little longer to be able to implement this model, so they would have to go through two generations more to be able to see a digital-only format of those in Kyoto.

The disappearance of physical games It is an issue that has been discussed in recent years in the video game sector, something supported by sales data, where the digital format is increasingly imposing itself with greater authority on the physical one.
