As part of the conversations that are taking place ahead of MWC Shanghai, Qualcomm presented the mission of expanding its product portfolio beyond smartphone chips, incorporating AI in this last period.

In this diversification the automotive market, XR, PC and the industrial market seem destined to be transformed by the rapidly growing artificial intelligence or AI technology.

During his presentation, Akash PalkhiwalaQualcomm’s chief financial officer and chief operating officer, noted that smartphones remain Qualcomm’s core market and those devices are being transformed by AI.

Other markets where AI enters

In his presentation, he highlighted the automotive market as Qualcomm’s next step forward, stating that “we have established ourselves as a leader in computing and Artificial Intelligence on the device. There are many new GenAI use cases coming to the cabin.”

“XR: We’ve already proven ourselves from a technology perspective, but XR could be the device that changes the most because of GenAI. With an AI assistant, you’ll be able to do things you wouldn’t have done in the past because you’re not limited by the form factor or screen size. All of that could change. This is a device that could be very disruptive.”

Smart cars and the work Qualcomm is doing

Palkhiwala highlighted the vehicle market as one where the user experience could be greatly improved thanks to Artificial Intelligence.

“One of the challenges as a consumer experience is that something goes wrong and there is a light on the dashboard and you don’t know what it is. So the effort to find out what’s wrong with the car, make an appointment and get it fixed is unnecessarily long,” he adds.

“Why not take an AI model, train it on the car manual, and make it available to the end user as a GenAI experience where you have a conversation with the car about what’s wrong and then the car can offer you ways and means to fix it?”
