It was one of the big surprises of the last Nintendo Direct and it is no wonder. More than 35 years later from its original release and for the first time in EuropeSquare Enix will release a new version of Dragon Quest 3 that couldn’t look better. It’s about a remake that adapts the game to current times and which we left very happy after our first contact (that’s what our impressions said: “an unreleased classic that returns more beautiful and playable than ever”). But we have not only had the fortune of trying it, but also of interview Masaaki Hayasakaits producer and we asked him about all the changes and news that we can expect to find next November 14, 2024when the title goes on sale.

MeriStation: Is there any option to adjust the number of random battles that occur like in other recent JRPGs?

Masaaki Hayasaka: “No, there isn’t. I myself asked Horii-san what he thought about introducing such an option using Bravely Default as an example. However, he was of the opinion that It’s not always the right choice to make things too fast and fluid and that’s why the idea was discarded.”

MeriStation: What was Yuji Horii’s role during the development of the remake? Did he suggest any new features?

Masaaki Hayasaka: “I have spoken a lot with Horii-san during the creation of this game. We have covered all the main topics like the story and the possibility of new features, but also smaller details and changes he would make to the original title. Many changes and ideas came from the new development team, but in the end they have been shaped following Horii-san’s advice and vision”.

MeriStation: This will be the first time that Dragon Quest III comes to Europe, why?

Masaaki Hayasaka: “There are a total of 11 main Dragon Quest games, but not all of them were available outside of Japan. By launching now The Erdrick Trilogywhich is the starting point of the saga, our hope is that more people will embark on the journey for the first time and attract new fans to future installments.

MeriStation: What kind of changes and updates have been incorporated into the remake’s story and narrative?

Masaaki Hayasaka: “The story has been reproduced as faithfully as possible to the original game, but we have added some extra narrative moments to go a little deeper. We will reveal them over time.”
