Recently, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate found herself at the center of a row following an objectionable remark purportedly made by the senior Congress leader about actor Kangana Ranaut, who has been named by the BJP as its candidate for the Lok Sabha elections from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh . This triggered a political controversy, with the ruling party attacking the Congress and demanding that she be sacked as the party’s social and digital media head.

The Election Commission has also issued a show-cause notice against her over the remarks.

The comment in Hindi, featuring a photograph of Ranaut, was posted from Shrinate’s Instagram account. “Kya bhav chal raha hai Mandi main koi batayega (can someone say what is the going rate in Mandi),” ella told ella, in a denigrating reference to the actor and her constituency. Denying her involvement with her, Shrinate claimed it was posted by someone who had access to her accounts with her.

Following the row, Shrinate also failed to feature in the Congress’s list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In 2019, she had run from the Maharajganj seat in Uttar Pradesh, however, this time, the Congress has named Virendra Chaudhary from the constituency.

Who is Supriya Shrinate?

Shrinate assumed the role as chairperson of the social media and digital platforms in Congress’s communication department in 2022. She had replaced Rohan Gupta, who was appointed as AICC spokesperson.

Hailing from Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh, she had unsuccessfully contested from the constituency in 2019.

Before entering politics, Shrinate was a full-time journalist and had worked with multiple media outlets. She served as Executive Editor at ET Now in New Delhi.

According to her LinkedIn profile, from October 2008 to March 2019, she also served as political editor at ET Now and had interviewed late Arun Jaitley, Piyush Goyal, P Chidambaram, Raghuram Rajan, Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella among others. Shrinate also attended global summits like World Economic Forum, BRICS, G-20.

Shrinate had a stint with NDTV for four years, from 2004 to 2008, serving as Assistant Editor. Before that, she worked at India Today as Special Correspondent. Shrinate pursued her Masters degree in History from University of Delhi and completed graduation from University of Lucknow.
