Once again, the Government decided to postpone the removal of subsidies for electricity and gas

Javier Milei decided to postpone, once again, the removal of subsidies for electricity and gas. The measure was scheduled with the objective of achieving a fiscal surplus but it will be delayed because the implementation of the Basic Energy Basket (CBE) was postponed to May and now they say it will be in June or July.

Official sources and sources from the energy sector assured Infobae that this delay is related to the difficulty of cross-referencing data that is necessary to determine which households will continue to receive the subsidy and which households will not.

Luis Caputo, Minister of Economy, had planned a cut of 0.5 points of GDP this year in the expenditure on fare subsidies and another 0.2 points of GDP would be added for AMBA transportation. But, the social situation worsened and that is why they decided to take another direction regarding the adjustment.

There is a commitment from the Government to the IMF to continue with increases of 200% in electricity rates and 150% in gas rates. Thus, they hope that in April the full cost of energy will be covered except for those homes that are considered “vulnerable.”
