Man arrested after person found dead in Hastings car fire

A man has been arrested and charged with murder following the discovery of a body inside a burnt vehicle in Hastings on Tuesday.

Police were called to reports of a vehicle on fire at a property on Irongate Rd West, Hastings on March 26 where a body was discovered inside the car.

A 30-year-old man was arrested mid-afternoon, Detective Inspector Martin James said in an update this evening.

He is due to appear in the Hastings District Court tomorrow.

Formal identification of the victim is ongoing.

James said while a man has been arrested, “there are still a number of unanswered questions.”

“We believe there are people in the community who have information that’s of value to us; some may not realize it.

“We need to speak with you if you have any information that could help us.”

Fire and Emergency NZ confirmed to 1News it was called to the fire on Tuesday night around 8.20pm. At the time, FENZ referred the matter to police as it was “deemed suspicious”.

Police said there is no wider threat to the public.
