SEVIERVILLE — The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved increasing the height for non-building structures in Tourist Commercial Zones during their meeting Monday night.

The change to the Sevierville Zoning Ordinance increases the allowable height of non-building structures from 88 feet to match the current allowable height limit of buildings at 110 feet. The ordinance also creates the requirement for any structures more than 88 feet in height to have a viewshed analysis done, to make sure the buildings or non-building structures are not blocking the view of the mountains.

A request to increase the height of non-building structures was made to the Sevierville Planning Commission during their monthly meeting by the owners of SkyLand Ranch, who are considering building a 110-foot tower swing on their property. The Planning Commission approved the change to the zoning ordinance.

The change only applies to the eight Tourist Commercial Zones in the city limits.

The board also approved the purchase of a new tool to help the Police Department access information on cellular phones.

The board approved the purchase of Cellebrite Premium Unlimited in the amount of $246,500.01 during their regular meeting Monday night.

“We received a grant through the Bureau of Justice Administration Rural and Small Violent Crime Reduction Grant, that we applied for back in 2023 to purchase this product,” said Police Chief Joseph Manning. “It is a cell phone digital forensic extraction software.”

The grant funding used to make the purchase will cover the cost for three years. The software is used to access locked or encrypted mobile devices.

The board also approved rezoning property off 1415 Middle Creek Road and Veterans Boulevard from Low Density Residential to Neighborhood Commercial; a fireworks display for “Large Cars & Guitars III” at Smokies Park; a WK Dickson Engineering amendment for an additional services authorization for Phase 5 for the 36-inch sanitary sewer interceptor rehabilitation for a not to exceed amount of $27,000; and the design work expenditure for improvements at the intersection of Old Newport Highway and Pittman Center Road for $268,415.

In old business the board approved the third readings to rezone property on 100 John L Marshall Drive from High Density Residential to Arterial Commercial and property on 109 River Mill Road from Low Density Residential to Intermediate Commercial.
