As the threat of wildfire returns, residents are urged to be prepared, and some training is on tap locally.

Coldstream Protective Services Department is hosting a FireSmart Community Workshop on Thursday, April 18 to share insight and expertise into managing wildfire threat on private property and preparing the community for an emergency.

The event takes place at Coldstream Community Hall (9909 Kalamalka Rd.) from 6:30 to 8 pm

The Regional District of Central Okanagan wants to make sure residents are prepared for anything with emergency readiness initiatives.

From April 15 to May 12, a series of in-person and online events take place to ask questions and share ideas on how to better protect the area ahead of floods, fires, and other disasters.

“With the increasing occurrence of disasters such as flooding, debris flows, drought, wildfires and extreme weather, being prepared for emergencies is more important than ever,” said Sandra Follack, emergency manager for the Regional Emergency Program. “Understanding how residents prepare for emergencies and their preferred methods for receiving critical information during such situations is crucial for the safety of our communities.”

For Westside residents, the event takes place Tuesday, May 7 at Killiney Beach Community Hall from 4 to 6:30 pm

It will cover topics such as:

How would you:

• Sustain your household for three to seven days without electricity or tap water?

• Cope if you had to evacuate your home on short notice?

• Contact your family and receive information during an emergency?

• Sign up for emergency support services?

Residents are also invited to share your thoughts online at yoursay.rdco.com.

Compete the questionnaire to share your level of preparedness and enter for a draw for an emergency kit valued at $170.

You can also share an idea – do you have suggestions for emergency preparedness?

Or contribute a story on how neighbors have helped other neighbors in times of need.

There is also an Ask an Expert series – submit your questions on topics related to post-wildfire hazards, FireSmart activities, and general emergency preparedness from April 15 to 26, and get expert advice during Emergency Preparedness Week from May 5 to 11.

For those without or with limited access to the internet, printed questionnaires are available by mail by calling 250-469-6193 or can be picked up at the North Westside Fire Department.
