This was ABBA’s victory and their ‘Waterloo’ at Eurovision in 1974

In 1974, the public of Eurovision went crazy when listening to the group ABBA and their waterloo. Now, in 2024, it will be 50 years since the success of the Swedish quartet and, furthermore, on this occasion it is Sweden that must organize the festival after Loreen’s victory in 2023.

The group, made up of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, took to the stage in Brighton, United Kingdom, to sing this catchy song that we have all sung or hummed at some point.

What was the intention of the topic?

In this topic, the group tells the story of a woman who reflects on the battle that Napoleon lost and compares it to his own love life. All this, while the director of the BBC orchestra wore a uniform similar to that of the French emperor.

This way, waterloo became the first genuine pop song to win the festival of the song. Until then, only ballads or songs with some pop element had won the trophy, but never a purely pop song.

With 24 votes, six more than the second place, ABBA won the prize and, in our case, Spain and its Sing and be happy de Peret obtained a ninth place. In total, there were 17 countries that participated in this edition of Eurovision, since only those belonging to Western Europe competed.

Finally, it should be noted that this was not the first time that ABBA tried to get on the Eurovision stage because, in 1972, they already tried, but were not selected by Sweden to attend the festival as representatives of the country.
