The death has been announced of one of the Welsh banding movement’s most influential and respected figures.
The death has been announced of Tony Small BEM — the founding conductor of Penclawdd Brass, and one of the most respected figures in the Welsh banding movement.
With the unwavering support of his wife Gillian, he became a totemic figure in Welsh banding – passionate in his determination to encourage and develop young players in both education and in community banding throughout the nation.
Penclawdd
His focal point was Penclawdd Brass whom he founded in 1964. It started as a school ensemble, but quickly grew into a youth band and then a successful community band.
Under his guidance, commitment and dedication it has given countless musicians of all ages a remarkable musical outlet as well as launch pad to successful and fulfilling careers.
In celebrating its 50th anniversary earlier this year, Tony Small said: “Penclawdd Brass has made me feel very proud. The players gave so much in reaching 11 National Championship Finals in each of the contest sections — topped by winning the National Second Section title in 1983.”
Fitting
It was therefore fitting that he was at Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall in March to witness his band claim the 2024 Welsh Regional Second Section title under the baton of one of his former pupils.
His pride in being able to see his band reach a twelfth National Final was marked — with a number of the players from that 1983 band still playing in the band.

Under his baton Penclawdd also claimed Welsh Regional Championship titles at Third, Second and — most memorably, Championship Section level. They were also successful at the Welsh National Eisteddfod and gained numerous Welsh League victories.
He also led the West Glamorgan Youth Band to the Welsh and National Youth Championships of Great Britain, and was a leading figure in the setting up and development of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.

A spokesperson for Penclawdd Brass said: “We are absolutely devastated to let our loyal patrons and supporters know that our recently retired Musical Director, Mr Tony Small, BEM, MMus, ARAM, FTCL, ARCM has sadly passed away.
Tony was an inspiration to all and his relentless dedication to students and players has nurtured some of the finest musicians in the country.
He formed Penclawdd Brass Band over 50 years ago and his unwavering dedication was second to none. Tony has left a legacy in our village which we intend to treasure.
Our sincere heartfelt condolences go out to Gillian, Gareth, Ian and their families at this heartbreaking time.”
