“So when you think about (Kentucky) Derby, I mean, when did Derby start? Almost a month ago in terms of the festivals and the parades and the fillies and the court and all that kind of stuff. So our kids see this and they hear about it all the time,” Johnson said.

He wanted to make sure the kids from Louisville area community centers got a taste of the Kentucky Derby.

“And a lot of them, especially of their age, do not get the opportunity to participate in any of the Derby festivities. So we want to make sure that they do,” Johnson said.

From sports to make-your-own Derby hat, and other activities, the Southwick Community Center felt like a perfect Derby party for kids of all ages. This was the 2nd annual Derby Field Day.

“Last week, we had a Derby party for seniors. It was just for seniors in the middle of the week and they had a ball. Yeah, you can talk about some fascinators, that’s what made me think about it. So we’ve done stuff for seniors as well. They have a Derby party every year. So we’re just trying to make sure that the Derby spirit is accessible to the entire community,” Johnson said.

Louisville Parks and Recreation plans to host another similar Derby field day next year.
