Tesco and Lidl follow Aldi’s lead in hiking price of shopping essentials

Another two supermarkets have raised the cost of a shopping essential online with Aldi’s price match.

The cost of tea bags at Aldi and Sainsbury’s has risen over recent weeks, with both retailers putting the price of their cheapest 160 box of bags up to £1.89 earlier this month.

Now Lidl and Tesco have this week followed suit, with Tesco putting their Stockwell bags up to 94p for a box of 80 and Lidl increasing the price of its 240-box of Knightsbridge Red Label Tea Bags to £2.79.

The change means Tesco now works out at £1.88 for 160, whereas Lidl is £1.86.

It comes after shoppers complained last week of being ‘tired’ of sky high food bills when prices in our weekly comparison remained stagnant despite inflation having fallen to its lowest level in two-and-a-half years.

Despite the rise, Lidl remains cheapest for the basket of essentials this week – costing £12.11 for tea bags, milk, bread, butter, coffee, beans, chicken and mince. Morrisons, with a bill of £12.37, is most expensive for the third consecutive week.

Aldi remains second cheapest, at £12.14, followed by Tesco at £12.32, and Asda and Sainsbury’s, both £12.33.

Aldi disputes the results of our weekly comparison, saying that it does not take into account like-for-like products or ‘the higher quality’ of its products. The supermarket says, for example, that Aldi beans are 20g heavier than Sainsbury’s and that Aldi teabags are ‘better quality than the comparative products used’.

Asda also disagrees with our comparison and says that our small sample of products does not represent the fuller picture of prices and does not account for its deals. The supermarket says that, across the board, its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi’s.
