Kersal Dale murder probe LIVE: Greater Manchester Police searches continue after more human remains uncovered – latest updates

Police searches are continuing this morning after more human remains were uncovered in a major murder investigation in Salford.

An investigation was launched on April 4 after a passer-by found a lower back, buttocks and a thigh wrapped in multiple sheets of cellophane at Kersal Dale. A 12-day search of the area began, with a huge cordon in place and search teams out for almost two weeks in a bid to identify the victim.

Over this weekend, four separate police cordons were put in place at Blackleach Country Park in Walkden, Worsley Road in Winton, Linnyshaw Colliery Wood also in Salford and Mitchell Street in Bury. Greater Manchester Police revealed that further human remains had been found.

Body parts were found by divers in the reservoir at Blackleach Country Park, with further remains also uncovered by a dog walker ‘in a package’ at Linnyshaw Colliery Wood. Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes, senior investigating officer in the investigation, said police were ‘very confident’ that they were the same victim.

Police revealed that the victim is thought to be a man in his 60s from Salford. Although formal ID has not yet taken place, his family have been informed of the discovery and are currently being supported by specialist officers.

Det Sup Hughes said that it is thought the victim was residing in the same house as the suspects in Winton, although they were not related. He was also revealed that the victim had likely died at the house in late March.

Four scenes were in place across the weekend

Two men – a 42-year-old and 68-year-old – were arrested earlier this week on suspicion of murder. They remain in extended custody for further questioning around these developments.

Searches are now continuing as part of the investigation. Det Sup Hughes said these were likely to continue for a ‘number of days’, with patrols also stepped up across Salford.

Four police scenes were in place yesterday

Four different police cordons were put in place this weekend as part of the investigation, after body parts wrapped in cellophane were found at Kersal Dale by a passer-by earlier this month.

A police cordon was put in place at Blackleach Country Park in Walkden. Police confirmed that human remains were found by divers in the reservoir there.

A cordon was also in place in Colliery Wood, where on Saturday night, a dog walker found a package containing human remains.

A house on Worsley Road in Winton was taped off, where the victim and the two suspects lived.

Police were also on the scene of a warehouse on Mitchell Street in Bury after household items were discovered there, but ‘there was no information that anyone who owns or works there is in any way involved in any criminality regarding this offence.’
