PERTH AMBOY – A 24-year-old city man has been charged in the fatal stabbing of another Perth Amboy man in the area of ​​Smith and Maple streets on Sunday night.

Luis Alberto Serrano Diaz has been charged with murder, a first-degree crime, as well as unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Perth Amboy Police Chief Lawrence Cattano announced.

Diaz was being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center in North Brunswick pending the results of a pre-trial detention hearing.

Around 9 pm April 28, police received a report of a stabbing in the area of ​​Smith and Maple streets where arriving officers found 32-year-old Jason Torres with multiple stab wounds, collapsed on the sidewalk. Torres was taken to Hackensack Meridian Health Raritan Bay Medical Center where he died from his injuries, according to the prosecutor’s office.

An investigation led by Perth Amboy Detective Jose Santiago and Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Michelle Coppola determined this was not a random act and Diaz knew Torres. Diaz was arrested without incident, the prosecutor’s office said.
