Two days after the arrest of a 65-year-old man for his involvement in the murder of a community club secretary in Agartala, the Tripura Police on Thursday arrested a woman in connection with the case, officials said.
The woman, identified as Sushmita Sarkar, 22, was produced before the court on Friday. The police have requested a 10-day police remand for Sushmita Sarkar, said counsel Indrajit Biswas.
Durga Prasanna Deb alias Viki Deb, secretary of Bharat Ratna Sangha – one of Tripura’s biggest social clubs – was shot dead at point blank range inside his car at Shalbagan on the outskirts of Agartala city around 8 pm on Tuesday.
On the same day, the police arrested Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury, 65, who was initially sent to police custody for three days which was later extended to five more days for further interrogation.
Deb’s body was moved to the mortuary of a private hospital, where different leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) visited the bereaved family.
According to the police, the assailant with his face mask knocked at Deb’s car and asked him to lower the car window. Upon doing so, the assailant fired three rounds from his firearm at a close range, killing Deb on the spot.
Tripura West District superintendent of police Kiran Kumar said that the murder could be the fallout of an enmity between two local rival groups of the club.
