Baseball opens series with 7-5 win over No. 14 Oklahoma State

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Baseball picked up a big series-opening win, 7-5, over No. 14 Oklahoma State on Friday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (29-18, 14-8) will now look to clinch the series on Saturday at 2:30 pm

Gage Boehm pitched 2 2/3 innings of stellar relief to pick up his fourth win of the season. He scattered three hits and finished with four strikeouts in the game.

Peyton Powell went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, including the game-winning run on a seventh inning sacrifice fly by Kimble Schuessler. Schuessler went 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI, while Max Belyeu finished 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored.

Max Grubbs was solid on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing four runs on six hits. He departed with the game tied 4-4 after six complete innings.

The Cowboys grabbed an early lead with an infield single and an RBI double in the second inning. Grubbs did well to limit the damage to just one run by getting three-straight groundball outs.

The Longhorns tied the game up 1-1 in the second inning, with Rylan Galvan driving in Belyeu with an RBI single. Oklahoma State quickly retook the lead, 4-1, in the top of the third with a pair of home runs off Grubbs.

Texas immediately tied the game up with a three-run bottom of the third on four hits. Jared Thomas and Powell both hit singles to get things started. Belyeu drove in the first run with an RBI single to left field. With two outs, Schuessler hit a game-tying two-run double to left-center field.

The Longhorns turned to the bullpen in the seventh inning and the Cowboys were able to scratch out a go-ahead run to take a 5-4 lead.

Texas had a big answer at the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs to take a 6-5 lead. Thomas singled to start the inning before Powell doubled to put them both in scoring position. After Belyeu was intentionally walked to load the bases, pinch-hitter Porter Brown was hit by a pitch to tie the game up. Schuessler drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Will Gasparino provided a big insurance run in the eighth inning, launching his 11th home run of the season out to left field to make the score 7-5.

Oklahoma State threatened at the top of the ninth with a walk and a single but Boehm slammed the door with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
