LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – The McNeese Cowgirls won their third straight regular-season Southland Conference Championship Friday evening with a 3-0 win over the team that was hot on their heels in the standings in the Southeastern Lions.
The Cowgirls capitalized off a big day from infielder Mariana Torres as she drove in all three of McNeese’s runs including what was a game-sealing two-RBI double at the bottom of the fourth.
Shaelyn Sanders took the circle once again for the Pokes and put together one of her best performances of the season as she pitched a complete game, striking out six batters as she shut out the Lions.
“I knew that they were going to be a good team, so I just tried to keep the ball low and in the zone,” Sanders said. “I just tried to throw it where my pitching coach was calling it, so just trying to settle in, lock in on one spot, and put it there.”
McNeese, who is beginning to peak at the right time, now has a chance to go into the Southland Conference tournament with the opportunity to win their fourth straight conference championship.
“It’s not one person that gets a hit, we all get in on the hitting. we all get the feast, and that’s what this team has done well, not one cares who gets the credit,” said Head Coach James Landreneau. “Just really kind of at a loss of words, just proud of these two girls to my right (Mariana Torres) (Shaelyn Sanders), outstanding leaders, outstanding human beings, but they were able to carry this team, and get us in this position, so just excited for the moment.”
The Cowgirls will finish their series against the Lions Saturday with a double header.
