A large fire on the premises of a metal factory in Berlin-Lichterfelde has caused a toxic cloud over the west of the city.

Last Friday, firefighters went to a German factory in Berlin to face a massive firewhile an official “toxic gas” warning was issued.

The fire department urges residents living near the factory to be alert for “toxic fumes caused by the fire“, after a chemical factory in southwest Berlin was “completely engulfed in flames.”

People are asked to avoid the scene and residents of nearby homes in Berlin-Lichterfelde are asked to close their windows and doors, as well as turn off ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Some 170 firefighters remained on scene until two in the afternoon to fight the huge fire. The fire, which started in a technical room on the first floor of the multi-storey building, now engulfs the entire factory and can only be fought from the outside.

Currently, specialists are carrying out air measurements to determine if harmful substances are present.

Mobile phone warnings about the toxic cloud

Berliners were warned through the NINA alert app (emergency news and information application) at noon to take urgent precautions and stay away from the area.

The fire department informed residents that the cloud of smoke is moving north over the city.

The smoke cloud is expected to move over Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Spandau, Tegel and also west of Reinickendorf in Berlin.

Until now, No injuries have been reported and the factory has been evacuated.according to local authorities
