Direct flights will soon take off from Brisbane to a Pacific tourism spot consistently ranked as one of the world’s best dive destinations.

From May 21, Nauru Airlines will run a non-stop weekly service between Brisbane and Palau for the first time.

The tiny archipelago near Papua New Guinea offers breathtaking underwater seascapes, and lush greenery, pristine beaches and rich cultural heritage.

It’s a further sign of international travel’s recovery, with Brisbane Airport now flying to 31 overseas destinations, just two short of the pre-Covid number.

Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said the new route would appeal to lovers of hidden tourist gems.

“This new direct service not only enhances Brisbane Airport’s role as Australia’s premier gateway to The Pacific but also invites adventurers to embark on a seamless journey to one of the region’s most inviting destinations,” he said.

“It’s now a very easy place to add to your bucket list.”

Nauru Airlines CEO Brett Gebers said it was exciting for the carrier to operate direct flights from Brisbane.

“This is a key addition to our broader Micronesian network and we know direct air access from Brisbane will be well received by travelers and the travel industry,” he said.

The flights were negotiated with cooperation with the federal government and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said it was a significant step for connectivity across the Pacific.

“Australia and Palau share common values and together we are delivering on our commitment to strengthening the Pacific,” she said.

“Australia has heard the calls from Pacific leaders for deeper connections and easier movement around the region, and is working to improve access, mobility, and migration opportunities.

“We are partnering with countries in the Pacific for a safer, more resilient and sustainable aviation sector.”

The Palau route will be a six-hour flight using a Boeing 737, departing Brisbane on Tuesdays at 11.30pm and arriving back in Brisbane on Thursdays at 5.30am.
