Glen Rovers corner forward Stephen Lynam leads the way in their SHL win over Kanturk

Glen Rovers 2-23

Kanturk 0-15

ANOTHER magnificent display from Glen Rovers corner forward Stephen Lynam paved the way for his teams comfortable win over Kanturk in the Red FM Senior hurling league at the Glen Field on Tuesday.

Lynam finished with a 1-7 tally but his movement and striking was a sight to behold and his absence from the Cork U20 hurling squad is a mystery judging by his performances for his club in this campaign.

After witnessing another clinical display Glen selector David Cunningham was naturally upbeat.

Kanturk’s Cian Clernon has his shot blocked by Glen Rovers’ Edwin Varian, during their SHL clash at the Glen Field.

“Kanturk were missing a few players but I think it’s the way we closed out the game that impressed us most and hopefully we will remain focused on the job in hand come championship time,” he said.

In truth, this wasn’t a one man show as the Glen despite playing understrength sides in their league campaign are showing a zest that was missing for the last couple of years.

Fresh from their win over Na Piarsaigh last week this was another impressive win over a side managed by one of their former players Donal Cronin.

Both teams were bright in the opening exchanges with Kanturk’s Alan Walsh and Dean Brosnan exchanging points in the second minute.

The pace of the game continued to increase and with Stephen Lynam once again showing real quality in the corner his second point in the eight minute edged the Glen ahead by the minimum 0-4 to 0-3.

Indeed the Glen playing with an understrength side showed true grit and should have raised the opening green in the ninth minute.

A magnificent Simon Quilligan run saw him place a blister shot but sadly for him and his team it went inches wide of the left post.

The Blackpool outfit were now in ascendancy and they deservedly raised the opening green flag of the game when Simon Kennifick got in behind the Kanturk defense to blast an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net.

The biggest threat to the Kanturk defense was the movement of Lynam coupled with the striking of Dean Brosnan and it was the former who punished the north Cork side with a second goal.

A nice assist from Dave Noonan found Lynam and his pace left the Kanturk defenders in his trail as he placed a low shot to the corner of the net.

Lynam had the final say of the half with his third point as his side led 2-12 to 0-9 and the same player opened their scoring on the restart.

The Glen captain this season is Dean Brosnan and his present form is impressive as he looks in terrific shape and his six point contribution from play was crucial for his team.

Credit to Kanturk they battling kept but when you are a dual club with injuries it is bound to hamper you and on many occasions in this game they were a yard off the pace.

The best goal chance of the second half fell to Kanturk’s Ciaran Maguire but his shot was easily saved by the Glen keeper Cathal Hickey.

That’s as good as it got for them as the Glen were by far the better side in this encounter on a beautiful evening at the Blackpool venue.Kanturk's Alan Walsh shoots under pressure from Glen Rovers' Conor O'Sullivan, during their SHL clash at the Glen Field.
