Washington (EFE).- Former US President Donald Trump, between 2017 and 2021, got this Wednesday the Court of Appeals to examine his request to disqualify the prosecutor of his criminal case in Georgia, Fani Willis.
The court noted that it will hear Trump’s appeal against Judge Scott McAfee’s ruling last March that allowed Willis to remain at the helm.
Trump and some of the 18 others involved in the case had called for Willis’ disqualification, claiming that her romantic relationship with special counsel Nathan Wade had created a conflict of interest that tainted the process.
Trump, accused of intervening in elections in Georgia
In his decision, McAfee had accepted the request of lawyers for Trump and the other defendants that they be allowed to challenge his decision before the Georgia Court of Appeals.
Trump’s lawyer, Steve Sadow, said in a statement that Willis “must be disqualified for her inappropriate conduct in this unwarranted and meritless political persecution.”
Today’s decision will likely cause a significant delay in the case against Trump, who is accused of interfering in Georgia in the vote counting in the November 2020 presidential election, where he lost to Joe Biden.
Trial postponed in Florida
The announcement also comes a day after Judge Aileen Cannon indefinitely postponed Trump’s Florida trial because of significant problems surrounding some evidence.
The former president is accused there because he took classified documents from the White House when he left power in 2021.
