HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – After watching NBC Nightly News again tonight, I am reminded how volatile the weather can be in spring. From violent tornadoes to freak flash floods and hail storms, this first week of May has lived up to its stormy and wet reputation. Somehow our region has managed to dodge the severe weather craze, if only for the first week of the month.

A fifth straight day with scattered showers and thunderstorms strengthens the notion that the spring rainy season has taken hold. Remarkably, so far at least, there has been a limited amount of high water and severe weather. Again tonight and Thursday, a Flood Watch as issued by the National Weather Service is valid where an ill-timed and perfectly placed downpour lingers for longer than an hour.

Looking ahead to Thursday and Friday, afternoon-evening showers will blossom with a thunderstorm possible in parts of the region. The wettest land so far is situated in Ohio Valley river valley towns. But since it has been a wet area-wide week, let’s hold off letting our guards down from the risk of flooding until we get to the pick day of the next five, that being Mother’s Day. Right now, the Sunday forecast favors dry weather and lots of sunshine for moms!
