(Update: Owner of Great Danes contacts police after public asked for help)

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) – Hours after Redmond police asked the public for help Wednesday in identifying the owner of four Great Dane dogs, one of which fatally attacked a Pomeranian dog on Monday at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds, they issued an update, saying they’d heard from the owner.

The owner of the Pomeranian rushed the dog to a nearby vet clinic, but he did not survive the attack, Redmond Police Lt. Eric Beckwith said.

As a result of her quick departure from the scene, “neither the owners of the Great Danes or the Pomeranian were able to contact each other” at the time, Beckwith said in the initial news release.

Redmond Police had released a photo of a white SUV, saying it was the only identification they were able to obtain, believed to be the owner of the Great Danes.

In an update later, police said the dog owner “initiated contact” with police and added, “Thank you to the public for their assistance.”

“As a reminder, dogs are required to be on-leash within Redmond city limits, outside of dog parks,” Beckwith said. “The property at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds requires dog owners to be in control of their dogs at all times.”

The woman who owns the Pomeranian posted about the incident on the Nextdoor social media app, saying she takes her “poms” to the fairgrounds “to let them run. They love it there.”

“I am so lost and sad over the loss of him,” she wrote. “All I could do when I finally got him away was to drive straight to a vet. But I knew he was gone.”

The lieutenant said that if you are the owner of the Great Dane, or know who the owner is, please contact the Redmond Police Department through dispatch non-emergency (541-693-6911), reference Case No. 24-12866.
