The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says until it greens up or we get some significant rain, there is an increased risk of grass and wildland fires in our city.
This comes after crews battled a brush fire Wednesday night that spanned the size of three football fields.
The fire broke out in a field in Transcona near Day Street and Gunn Road, shortly after 7 p.m.
As a precaution, rail traffic was stopped in the area. The WFPS drone was also brought in to help direct crews to hotspots while they battled the large blaze using specialized wildland firefighting equipment.
It took about an hour to get the fire under control. No injuries were reported.
Scott Wilkinson, Deputy Chief, Fire Rescue Operations and Training says almost all wildland fires are caused by human activity.
“We are asking residents to be cautious and take steps to prevent these fires,” Wilkinson said. “It’s also important for property owners near wildland areas to properly maintain their yards to reduce their risks.”
Typically, the WFPS responds to approximately 200 vegetation fires within city limits. This number increases when conditions are drier than normal.
